If I'm totally honest, I think you need a minimum of 32Gb RAM these days, especially if simulations are part of your mix. In the independent Houdini artist space the question is most often 64 Gb or 128 Gb. I know RAM isn't as cheap as it once was, but you'll get a bigger performance bump from a decent amount of RAM than you'll get from many CPU upgrades (particularly if it's coupled with decent SSD).

Can someone confirm that Softimage 2015 will work with "RTX 2070 Super" or the slightly cheaper "RTX 2060 Super" ?
Thanks in advance...

Hey Hirazi,

You can go for a RTX 2070 SUPER :)

We’re using 2070 and 2060S with Ryzen9 without problems (we don’t do GPU rendering though), and you have also the 30 series now. We’re using Maya, Softimage, Unity and Blender right now in those PCs.

About RAM I’d consider 16Gb as the minimum, and 32Gb as a decent configuration.
We’ve had serious performance problems with 16Gb and multiple 4K textures using Substance, Photoshop and UE at the same time that we didn’t have with PCs that had 32, 64Gb or even 48Gb.

Btw PCs are extremely easy to assemble nowadays. You need virtually zero knowledge of anything but how to read a manual and how to google if you have a doubt. If you have the time I’d suggest to give it a try.

If you are careful with static electricity, or you’re not in a very dry room, you have an extremely low chance to screw it up and burn something.

Thank you both for the confirmation!
I have decided to go all-in and overshoot my budget just a little bit
to get 32GB RAM and a "RTX 2070 super"...
This means I will have to stop eating Beluga caviar for breakfast every morning... :D

If you can, you should consider to wait for the 30 series middle range . It’s been said that they will be way faster than the 20 series.

Hmmm, I don't know...
Basically I am happy with the configuration as it stands
and considering the apparent mess surrounding the launch of the 3080
I don't know if it's all that wise to wait...

And more importantly:
in this wonderful world of computer graphics there will always be a more shinier piece of kit on the horizon... $-)
I am just glad to put this whole business of hardware decision-making behind me for a couple of years again...
