Some animals

Post by Pancho » 01 Oct 2014, 22:06

Hi there,

I recently finished a small campaign for synthetic fur bags.

No animals were harmed in the production of the these bags, so even animals would buy/pose with them. That’s the idea behind it.

Technically I used SI. No big secrets. Rigging was done by Georg Schneider, the rest by myself. The hair has been created with my own fur system, using strands in ICE.Contrary to MR, RS worked like charm even/especially with GI enabled. Inpossible in MR.

About 20-40m before it actually started to render, but then it took only about 1h to render 8x6k (Titan Black). Fantastic!

Since I created the fur system by myself. I could take care of intersections of the strands with the actual geometry. So no bald patches which needed retouching. Using Modo or LW in the past, this was one of the biggest issues with their fur solutions. Especially with flat, wild hair.

So in the end, apart from minor retouching and brightness changes, very little post production.

Cheers
Thomas

'Some animals' indeed!!!

So you're saying that you basically used your own (furry) features to make your subjects so lifelike?

Man! Softimage is what again? dead you say?

I think it's as alive as what made those creatures look so alive :]

Make my words the FxDude ones.

Add this should be in Great Softimage Work.

Edit: how do you render tested to get the correct look?

@Pancho - What specifically did you want to address when you set out to build your own fur system?

After working with LW and Modo fur I was pretty much fed up with all those limitations and not knowing what's going on under the hood. Especially flat fur without interpenetration isn't possible with both software packages. And while SI might be able to comb guide hair ON the mesh, I'm not sure whether the strands generated afterwards would behave in the same way. With my fur system I can take care of this.

I also have the ability to change the order of the styling. Depending on what you want to achieve this will make a big difference. So, in the end I've got pretty much all the freedom I need, while it might be a bit slower, since it is fully made in ICE.
