What if 3 years from now Softimage lives on?
What if 3 years from now Softimage lives on?
I mean still used in big productions, great commercials and the like. Nothing will hurt Autodesk more than a Zombie Autodesk Software <-- i think i'll have to register this

I for one would be delighted, however chances of this happening on a scale to affect Adsk in any way are small at best.

What if I told you that the bigger studios ramp up and down their licenses based on projects? What if I also told you that AD will no longer sell licenses of Softimage? When that "big" company needs to ramp up... then what?
Re: What if 3 years from now Softimage lives on?
What if companies simply used a crack for software that isn't sold anymore, but is 'system-relevant' for them? What's AD going to do? That's not a simple law situation, I guess.EricTRocks wrote:What if I also told you that AD will no longer sell licenses of Softimage? When that "big" company needs to ramp up... then what?
After all, there's no loss of revenue in that case for AD.

You can't run a real business like that. Not in the US at least. If you're found out you'll be in big trouble and it puts your clients at risk as well since if you get shut down, their projects are at risk.Eugen wrote:What if companies simply used a crack for software that isn't sold anymore, but is 'system-relevant' for them? I am talking about commercial work that don't need huge number of seats.

If you think AD will feel the hurt from the small commercial shops not switching, well, you're wrong honestly. The user base is too small for them to care. We've all seen the numbers about how small our community is compared to Maya. Even Maya, is a tiny drop on the AD sales.

Adsk generates about 400-600 million dollars in revenue EVERY quarter.
Wait. Wait.. You think your money matters to them, lol.

Sadly by the time that becomes a grey area al la abandonware, it will no longer be useful compared the the current systems.Eugen wrote:What if companies simply used a crack for software that isn't sold anymore, but is 'system-relevant' for them? They still own everything softimage. Just because they don't sell licenses, doesn't mean you can use their software cracked.
SI doesn't belong to you. Sorry

I paid $3000 for my copy, plus 700 for render nodes and a couple years of subscription costs which were basically extortion. I beg to differ with you. The Softimage I use is mine and I will use it as long as I want to with or without Autodesk.missingkey wrote:They still own everything softimage. If 3 years from now Softimage lives on..
it would only mean that the decision makers died of cancer.
Which at this point I prefer

Just google around for trueSpace websites -- you're looking at Softimage 5 years from now. Except trueSpace was free for awhile, and SI never was. So it'll likely be worse, since the bulk of Softimage users are people using it commercially, and have incentive to find a replacement sooner than later.
