Softimage|WIKI - dead or alive?

Post by Hirazi Blue » 12 Jun 2009, 09:37

As I have been doing some "unsollicited" editing of the Softimage|WIKI recently,
I've been wondering, if anyone uses (as in: looks at) it anymore. :-?
I don't know what Autodesk's plans for the WIKI are, but I would personally would find it a shame
if it were to close as it still contains a lot of valuable information.
However, if nobody uses it anymore, who could truly blame them... :ympray:

Having said this, I would be very interested in your opinions on the current state,
the future and the general usefulness of said WIKI... %-( ;)

Hi

There are no plans to close the wiki (if there are, they did not tell me :-).

The wiki includes many things: support KB, articles, documentation. There is no one place we could move all that info. That's what I tell everybody.

Thanks for the info! Always good to know... :D
The question, however, remains: does anyone else use the WIKI & why or why not...
Does it for example need an overhaul? Are important things missing? :-?

...I love the WIKI too... :x

Yet still way too many people seem unaware of the existence/usefulness of the WIKI,
while the (obviously necessary) steady growth of support articles in the Autodesk Knowledge Base may also send a "mixed" message, IMHO... ;)

Even though I go visit the XSI Wiki rather seldom, I would really miss it if it some day suddenly wasn't there anymore. When I'm working on a plug-in what-so-ever and I'm stuck because of a bug (or something I just haven't understood yet) then I often find valuable info in the Wiki.
A recent example concerns emPolygonizer: I was at Owei's place and had been fighting with vertex colors, parameter classification and other "ugly" things b-( and after two really frustrating days Owei found the piece of information to get things going again. And where did he find it? :D Yes, right! In the Wiki! :-!

! LONG LIVE THE XSI WIKI !

yeah I was suprised that if you go to the New Softimage Product page on the Autodesk.com website click on service and support the first link that they give you is the Wiki http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps ... D=12544120

For those of you, who hadn't already noticed, much (if not all, I haven't checked :ymblushing:) of the info contained in the lesser well-known
FaceRobot-WIKI has now been integrated in the Softimage-WIKI (I wonder why??? :-? )
Find this "new" category here

Is there an offline version somewhere around? Since the Softimage Wiki is down for a while now and i'am using the Wayback Machine to access old pages....

Here are earlier downloads of HTTrack from softimageblog.com and wiki.softimage.com sites (unrar and start index.html). From these, the contents of wordpress and mediawiki databases could be accurately reconstructed and rehosted(?) or converted (HelpNDoc). Unfortunately, I don't have time for that.

I also have downloads of the wiki and some other pages.
I did some tests last year and got it kinda working, So putting it together properly and hosting is on my list of things for this year, if possible.
