Transformation speeds with the manipulators

Hello,
I don't use manipulators, but my students do.

When not using manipulators, you can use 3 speeds for transformations. For example, if I want to translate an object at 3 different speeds, I do this:
1 : Make sure manipulators are off : MCP > transform > Enable transform manipulators > off
2 : Choose a transform mode : scale, rotate or translate.
3 : Double click on one of the 3 mouse buttons, depending on the axis you want to move the object along.
4 : use the left mouse button for slow speed, middle mouse button for medium speed, right mouse button for fast speed.

Now the question is : how can one do this when using manipulators?
