Iris Door needed
Iris Door needed
I have been trying for some time to build an iris door. I understand the concept I would like to implement and have tried to use several different software packages; blender, Softimage Mod Pro 7.x, Truespace, google sketchUp. I am no way an artist or 3d modeler. I have seen the project outlined in issue 21 of HDRI 3D and have tried to build one, without any luck. I would love to know how to do it, not just for the knoweldge but to use in a game I am building. Any help would be great.

Re: Iris Door needed
Does your problem mainly lie with modeling the iris door or with the typical iris door functionality (the way it opens and closes)? If it's the latter much depends on the game engine you're trying to import it in, so if that's the case, please tell us, what engine it is meant for...

Not sure what part you get stuck on.
Any chance of finding that article somewhere, so we can have a look?

Re: Iris Door needed
I am trying to tackle to first problem. The actual model itself is simple. I have tried to create the model, using an article I found in HDRI mag. The hardest part is learning all of the command and key strokes for the model program. Plus understanding the terminology used. My forte is programming and mathematics, I can create the code for the math or physics, but the drawing and artwork boggles me. I have created a head in blender by following a set of instructions, cannot find that tutorial. I have all kinds of programs I can choose to do this in but don’t know how those programs work.
The functionality is straight forward. Once I can create the model, I will then work on the next phase; that should be a bit easier since XSI Model Pro is integrated into the XNA framework and Visual Studio.
The idea is to have 8 triangles centered on the open point. Each will move, in unison, at a 45 degree angle away from the center point. The concept here is once the door begins the open/close cycle it will go to completion; I may change this once it is modeled.

I will work on scanning the article and posting it. I have uploaded the files to my SkyDrive ->
