ICE Book Pages

Post by Pete » 17 Jun 2009, 07:06

Hi there!

I'm trying to figure out how to get Ice to create the turning pages of a flipbook and I am pretty close to cracking it i think!
The thing that has got me stumped is how to apply a sequence of images to the particle instances. Is something like this even possible? I can't seem to get ice to apply different materials per particle instance.
Anyway if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear 'em.
I'll gladly stick it up here if I manage to get it figured.

Hi ..!
That looks nice allready..! I think, you will have to "build" every page of your book and texture it to achieve different textures..put your models into a instance group ICE will use. You can now reach every instance via element ID of each groupmember and asign this to your specific particle...this worked out for me, but I´ll have to dig out this scene ;)

Hope this helps..!

You can create an attribute for each particle. This attribute can be used in the rendertree to apply different textures.

Yeay!
There are 100 page turn models sitting in my scene :p But it does appear to be working!
Here's the ICE tree

there is a simpler way to do that

check out this image from "miga":

thanks miga

look for the underlined sections.
i hope this applies to instances too.

Thanks but i that method won't work for me as you can't replace an instanced particle's material and i can skip around in the instance time as I am using the pageturn animation from the instance.
It seems to be working okay though even though I do have a crazy amount of instance objects in the scene. One thing tht isn't working though is Motion blur! Doesn't that work with instance particles?

With Motion Blur (instanced geometry doesn't render)

Without Motion Blur (instance geometry renders)

Man that's frustrating. I'm starting to think i should do this without ice and just manually manage a crapload of pages :(

Hello, for instanced geometry animation you need to turn the cache on.
You will find it in the active environment in the simulation time control.
Beside that, i've recently had a similar problem where instanced geometry disapears from the renderer with motion blur on, just like you... I solved that by turning the motion blur setting on the "End of frame" . My deadline was too close so I haven't figured out why... Anyone could give me an explanation ?

...don´t have an explanation for that issue. Could be a simple bug, keeping in mind that rendering ICE-instances is a sort of a problem at all in MentarlRay, what is really annoying...if caching solves that, just go for it ;)

Cache sounds like a good idea but then -
\Simulation\pointcloud\pointcloud_A_56.icecache could not be found!

I don't know why it got this error, it seems as though the cache files are being created in that location..?
Also what is the blur setting on the end of frame?

for the cache it seems that you need a simulate particles operator plugged in your ice tree.
for the "end of frame option" it's in your renderer motion blur setting.

Did someone had solved properly this ? because now on another project i have this problem and none of the solution i've posted seems to work ...

Yeah it sucks alright! I'm still in trouble with this one.
I'm just praying my client doesn't ask for motion blur :P
Only problem, it really needs it...

hey there, did you change the framepadding in the rendersettings after caching???
for some weird reason the framepadding affects the padding in the cache files.
for example you cache your icetree while having the framepadding on ".#" the default value and then after setting your render options for the final rendering with a frame padding like ".####" xsi can't find the cache files, as it's searching for the cache files with a framepadding of 4 digits but your cache does only have 1.
That at least is on 7.1 don't know if they solved this "bug". It took me a whole day to find out, and was driving me crazy.
posted is on xsi base a while ago.
I hope it helps.
cheers
christian
