Extrude along normal. Bug or not.

Post by Xsinode » 09 May 2015, 14:45

Why when i'm applying extrude along normal to the edge loop i'm get random extrusion as result. (normal direction used incorrect). See picture for example.
1 Get simple cylinder
2 Apply extrude along normal
3 In result (top view)
4 Expected result
It's normal or bug?

No idea but I am guessing its meant to be used for faces rather than edges.

To be honest I completely forgot of "extrude along normal" and I have only been using the extrude and then the local/global transform to translate/scale/rotate what I extrude.

Here's an alternative, do a regular extrusion (CTLR+D), then X and scale it up, gives the exact result you are looking for, you can also extrude and use a "push" deformer (especially for more complex edge loops).

Another way I like to move mesh components along a particular normal is once the selection is made, press the key to use "move component tool" and select an edge/face or vertex with the mouse middle button (aka clic on the mouse wheel) so the transform aligns to the normal of that mesh component.

Try to freeze your object's transformations and history before extruding.

Yes i know about scaling and other methods. But i don't understand why developers cant fix this simple bug for more usability this tool.

History and transformation is absolutely clear :)
