Triple subdivide mesh

Post by Pancho » 25 Jul 2014, 21:24

Is there a way to to triple subdivide a mesh? Usually a polygon is cut into four pieces. Each edge is split a its center. This way you will generate polys in a 1:4:16:64:256:..... way. Sometimes the amount of polygons nedded is somewhere inbetween. So, can I split each poly into 9 polygons? Split each edge twice into three new edges?

Is the "Topology part in ICE capable of doing this or any other software?

Also, is there a way to turn a quad mesh into an evenly space triangle mesh? I tried to turn a mesh in Sculptris from quads into tris, BUT also the reduction function for sculpting is great, it doesn't deliver a good result in this case.

Cheers and thanks for any help!

I'm not sure what you really meant, but if you want to subdivide into triangles all you have to do is press: Shift + D and change the type to triangles. (or diamonds)

The evenly spaced triangle mesh is something different.

My main objective is to subdived a regular quad poly into 9 and not 4 new subpolygons. Instead of splitting it into a "window with a cross in the middle" I want to go from quad to "tic-tac-toe" grid. THis way I could be able to enlarge the amount of polygons by factor 9x and not 4x or 16x, generating a different mesh resolution.

I am not exactly sure but Doo sabin subdivision algorithm divides a polygon into 9 so you can explode all your polygons into seperate objects and apply local subdivision operator on each of the separated mesh.

Wouldn't the "Dice Polygons Op" do the trick?

Alternatively you could select all the faces, convert to edges, and use 'Subdivide Edges Evenly' with a value of 2.
