User Normal Translator Author: Sakana-Ya aka GOTETZ
This plugin extends the normal editing toolset in Softimage. It adds functions such as numerical transform, spherize around center, invert and smooth. Also it allows back and forth conversion to a colormap, which makes the normals editable with the vertex paint tool, or using Softimage's spreadsheet editor for weights.

Introduction and demo on vimeo. Documentation available here with a screenshot of the GUI.

Incredible tool indeed and the best moment of the video was the end part where it is said Softimage is alive :-bd

I always miss a feature to spherify normals so that billboards don't look like planar in all directions which is a traditional workaround for creating game ready trees.

[mod edit - merged two threads, gaboraa's "original post" post came out on top - editing it so it contains Bullit's description -rr]

As you say Gaboraa, useful for simulating light transmission through multi-layered translucent surfaces.

It reminded me seeing somewhere the use of normal trickery to avoid calculating all the light transmission involved in such shading.
(perhaps as a pass)

And there's a nice (and now easy :) ) example of that.

And yeah his work looks awesome! Nicely refined toon shading with gradients.

Cool! Stuff. I often found myself in the need of controlling normals. Indeed a useful tool.

Now the question is: where the hell, that real time ink line is coming from????

I want it!

P.s.: cool the "softimage is alive" at the end, too.

Thank you, Manny!

That shader is beautiful.

So, it's impossible having the InkCamera shader for the HighQuality view, right?..
I see that they built it, so it's proprietary.

Really cool! some really stunning tricks and results with this tool, thanks for sharing.
I could also see this being used for things such as stylized clouds.

Yashugan, it's probably a problem with github.
They have this annoying issue that it looks like download links on the page that you could right click download, but actually you have to left click the link and then on the next page right click download the "raw" button. That gets you the actual file and not an html page with the same name as the file.

or click here ;)

No worries Bullit, I'll merge the threads if you don't mind
