Re: Softimage ice & Houdini
Comparing Softimage ICE and Houdini, apple and oranges. Both are built with different philosophies and workflow in mind. Narrowing Softimage to ICE and comparing to Houdini is forgetting that Softimage is more than just ICE, and in many ways Soft is better than Houdini (try modeling and animating wi...

Re: low-cost 3D software (alternatives to Blender?)
In North America, if you buy BodyPaint3D standalone, it include all the features of Cinema 4D Prime (basically you are buying Prime + sculpting/painting environment) ... and at the same price too. Thanks Maxon! If you want prime, Buy BodyPaint 3D, its a better deal in North America at the moment. ht...

Re: low-cost 3D software (alternatives to Blender?)
@Hirazi Blue Sadly Maxon doesn't offer "competitive sidegrades" for Softimage anymore... Softimage is currently listed on th US website .. I guess if you live in North America, you are in luck. https://www.maxonshop.com/us/gp/Qualified%20Sidegrades/1/ You could also argue that if you own t...

Re: low-cost 3D software (alternatives to Blender?)
Maxon Cinema4D R8 c/w XL Bundle (still running 8.5 on an old Window 7 machine), my favorite after Softimage XSI. I liked the Cinema 4D workflow, it was easy to learn and to get good results. This version is before they split the program in different packages. Maxon was selling C4D with "modules...

Alias Maya 6 circa 2004, got this from a game company that went bankrupt during their fire sale auction. $20 ( Never installed it, don't even know which version this one is or if it need a dongle.) 2 years later, Alias was assimilated by AD

Re: low-cost 3D software (alternatives to Blender?)
LightWave 6 and 7 books
Lightwave was my first, personally owned program. I did not mind switching between the modeler and layout module. I used LW until 7.5, that's when I switch to Softimage and never looked back.

Re: low-cost 3D software (alternatives to Blender?)
3D Studio Max 2 book (I started with 3D Studio at the office, MS-dos version, limited GUI, all command lines BTW, a throwback of AutoCAD days. I was glad when the first 3DS Max version with a better GUI arrived.)
How the time have changed.

Re: low-cost 3D software (alternatives to Blender?)
XSI Books over time. I always was jealous of MAX and MAYA as every new version brought a plethora of books, not so for Softimage which, IMHO, contributed to its downfall.

Kai Power Tools and Fractal Design Painter4 (not 3D software but good old stuff). As you can see I still have my Paint Can. I had also PhotoShop version 3 and it was a nice upgrade to my old Deluxe Paint II. Painter is now owned by Corel. I am still a heavy user of Corel Painter, One of my favorite ...

Re: low-cost 3D software (alternatives to Blender?)
Bryce3D and Ray Dream 3D (which was later combined with Infini-D to become Carrara). Bryce has an odd interface but the results were good at that time for a hobbyist/beginner. RayDream 3D was an introductory 3D software for beginner/hobbyist. Bryce, Carrara and Hexagon are now owned by DAZ3D and are...
