Hi,
Just tested one of my old presets, and extracted the thumbnail. It ends up as a 64x64 px .bmp file, 32 bit.
I don't know what version of Softimage you're using for the generation, but maybe use an older version of Softimage just to check?

Re: Cycles for Softimage
The thumbnails are the most work to add to the presets, or at least the most tedious.
Looking forward what you come up with

Custom shelfs with tabs to folders and shader icons are mentioned in the manual. I did one long ago for the Lume shaders.
It's not that complicated, only quite a bit of work and some commandline elbow grease

Can you still find any installer of Softimage on the website?
And a 2013 version would be best, as the 2012 version had a lot of issues with the disconnecting shadertrees if I recall correctly.
rob
but good luck on the 'hunt'....

Re: Arnold or Mental Ray: is it worth using both within SI ?
Hi, Yes data exchange as in moving FBX files back and forth, or Alembic or something both applications will export/import. And yes, doing the fluids and/or smoke simulations in Blender for final compositing in e.g. Nuke or Natron is the right idea. You probably will have to do some testing, as camer...

Re: Arnold or Mental Ray: is it worth using both within SI ?
Hi, So many questions :) Some thoughts & ramblings on the matter..... The reason why Arnold is used a lot with Softimage has a historic reason. It was basically the first adaption to a professional 3D app, after Arnold was in beta for a long time within 3DSMax. (e.g. Lara Martinez 'Pepe' movie) ...

Re: Getting a toolbar to open in a fixed size and position
Not sure.... Maybe you can check the toolbar code and see if it's still looking at wrong coordinates. And be sure to have all the rights on the files too. Maybe something's off there too. Other than that, it's been a while, and the version of Softimage and Windows could interfere somehow by now. rob

Hi Matt!
This year's software goal will be properly learning Blender, and getting more deeply into Unity and Painter.

Re: Unreal Engine for free
Even with all the latest updates, Unity 2018 still is a bit behind in the graphics dept. compared to Unreal. I feel one needs a little bit more work to get the look you want in Unity, despite it has gained a lot in the last updates. Have a look at 'the book of the dead' demo, and you know what I mea...

Re: Introduction to rigging xsi
If I understand your question correctly, yes, when making a movie there's a TON of software used. It's not -just- Maya, or Houdini or..... It's a huge mix of different 2D & 3D applications. And rigs will never port over from software A to software B. There's too many differences in the core eng...
