Re: Exocortex / mootzoid

This video gives a pretty good demo of the Character Object in C4D. Not Species but a reasonable auto rigger for character work. Cactus Dan's rigging tools are well respected in the C4D community but I'm pretty sure the internal tools now are comparable in s...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Very restrained Marketing we have. ... Softimage did have almost none at all in the AD era, for that matter. Very unwise not to, because advertising is a necessity, and Maxon could need some more development money, I'd reckon. Btw, if you guys have beta access, by all means, give them the boot to g...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Maxon are recruiting developers if you know of any SI developers get them to apply! None that are (yet) available I guess... =p Talking about developers: I'm none, but I liked writing a plugin or two for Softimage. Wouldn't mind to 'bless' C4D with some stuff, too, if it made sense. I already stuck...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Quo vadis, Cinema4D... I don't mean specific roadmap details, but the whole concept - is it meant to be a 'casual' 3D program for the masses, or do they want it to become more 'high-endish', a studio backbone and platform? All of this? There are many good approaches, but as a whole, C4D seems to be...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

For instance I wanted to target the intersection of a Boole object as a polygon selection but the only way to do this is to convert the Boole object to a polygon object thus killing the parametric workflow and killing your ability to animate the Boole. There are certain times it gets annoying that ...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Thanks for the verbose answer, Günter, that indeed clears up some things! The joker is this remark: "the "moextrude" is an exception here as Srek already pointed out as it generates new geometry" That's what I addressed with my SDK question. It's obviously possible to develop pa...

Re: Strands?

The wool example is rendered in C4D's native renderer, VRayforC4D also supports hair BTW and interfaces well. I do not use 3Delight but would assume hair could be rendered if the user generated hair polygons. Now I have impression, that you never ever used any Renderman compliant to render hairs. P...

Re: Strands?

Well, with all due respect to your optimism, I'd be free to put it into something like 'partially possible', nothing perfectly, nothing robust. Don't get me wrong, but someonee will try to compare the performance of that python script and ICE or Houdini live operator. Someone will try to render thi...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

As a matter of fact, although Multithreading IS always possible (programmatically), that doesn't mean it will yield computational benefits in many cases. The easiest example is the domino effect. A single row of dominoes, for example 24 of them, each assigned to a single thread in a 24 core system,...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

One of the things I should've said also is that Maxon beta testers will go to any length to defend Maxon, a loyal breed. Anyone who thinks multithreading isn't always applicable has been supping on the Maxon koolaid for too long or has mistaken this forum for CGTalk. It's like arguing ICE should be ...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

What?? :-t Is the rendering multi threaded at least? Yes of course but everything else is single threaded apart from the deformers which only arrived in the last release R15! Rendering is good with the new GI modes in R15 but IMO not a match for VRayForC4D but there's a lot to like about the Physic...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

While Cinema4D is an excellent application in many regards there are some things that will be quite a shock to a Softimage user. While C4D's viewport is very fast and able to throw a lot of polygons around its object handling is very poor. It will not take long to completely bind up the viewport whe...

Re: GTX Titan and 780 performance

The 780 is benchmarking between 80-90% of a Titan in gaming style benchmarks at 60-70% of the price. The difference in SI viewport could end up being negligible. There's definitely a gap in the market for a Professional Software Benchmarking Site but I guess that market is just too small for sites t...

Re: Considering a move to SI would love some advice.

I am debating whether to sign up for Subs or not, how many updates per year do you normally get? If you care about costs, not much point. There won't be any worthful new features in future because there is no available plugins for AD to buy. Don't you have to be on Subs to get service packs? That w...

Re: Considering a move to SI would love some advice.

Used them all: 3DMax (v3 and up), LW (v5 and up), Maya (v6 and up), C4D (v6 and up) and SI (v4 to current). SI is definitively the one I stuck with but I also kept C4D. I use C4D import/export capability very often to bring models to Softimage. Keep C4D as your backup, even an old version can be us...

Re: Considering a move to SI would love some advice.

Thank you both for the replies. I wasn't trying to be controversial in anyway just trying to ease my way into SI ownership. From my point of view SI looks the perfect step up from C4D as an application for an individual rather than a complete team. I do freelance motion graphics and I have long admi...
