ICE Rope RigAuthor: Vincent Ullmann
This compound creates a rope/tube along a series of Null controllers. Allows adding controllers between existing ones, controls edge-hardness with controller scale. Automatic even mesh subdivision. Configurable using a fcurve for thickness, roll parameters, custom profile etc.

ICE-Rope-Rig (with Dynamic Controler Count and nice Subdivis

Post by Loqy » 06 Jul 2012, 15:24

Hey,
here is a little Demo of a ICE-Rig for Ropes or some other thinn things.

Download:
Klick here

Things on my To-Do-List:
  • Fix flipping Problems, when Rope goes nearly parrallel to the Y-Axis
Some things i have on my "Nice-To-have-List":
  • Fix some Points so that the Rope doesnt slide always all along. (If you may want to have a Charakter hold the Rope in his hands)
  • Add ThicknessControl via Null-Scale ?
  • Add Roll/Twist-Control via Null-X-Rotation ?

This time i managed to record my Voice with my Smartphone. Hope you understand enough and get along with all my spelling-, grammar-, word-invention- and content-Mistakes

Impressive little tool.
Sound and language seem perfectly fine to me.
The video might however be a tad long... ;)

PS This is obviously more than just a "Rope Rig", it's a "Rope Maker"
(to belatedly argue some semantics here) :D

Is this the flipping problem you mean? Or am i doing something wrong? It seems to worse when set to "fixed" spacing mode and on the "bottom null"...

Btw i don't think your video is too long at all, you just went through all the different features, very usefull!

Oh and thanks for this compound - i really like it :D

Hmm... doesnt look that good. :)

Does it appear when your Rope is nearly parralel to any Axis (Y i think) ?
Or may it help if you rotate the Null by 180° ?

Hey sorry for the late reply, i've been trying to do too many things at once...

I played with it some more and the problem seems to basically always happens if i rotate the null in y, local or global or view etc, but is absolutely fine to rotate in z.

I can see that you in your video don't have that problem so i don't know what's going wrong :-??

Here is my scene if you want to take a look at it:

Love the compound Vincent, really useful, thankyou for sharing it.

I do have issues with it though. It trys to connect all the nulls to form a loop or one end of the mesh jumps back to the origin where there is no Null.

altering the fixed number slider helps but there is still a twist usually.

I am wondering if this error on using the compound has anything to do with it ?

Could not find node : Incr_Counter
Could not set value on [Incr_Counter 66].Reference

It could be updated nodes since 2012 and 2013, my ice knowledge is limited.
