Legend of the Guardians AND Softimage

Post by curly » 17 Oct 2010, 14:43

Watch this video and look at 2:18 for a very well known software interface.

Who says Maya rules if these pro's also use XSI?

I wonder if these guys have used ICE Strands for the feathers?

According to Aloys Baillet in this thread on the Softimage Mailing List:
Feather system was a completely proprietary system called Quill
(you can see the name in the credits :-), with bridges for Maya, XSI and
PRMan.
So no ICE Strands I'm afraid.
He also mentions the following:
The prod was mixed Maya for modelling/layout/fx/lighting and XSI for
riggin/anim.
So, still more of a "perfect companion to Maya" but impressive nonetheless... ;)

Hmm, I wonder if Quill is an XSI plugin and whether it will be made public at some point...I'm sure it was originally developed for (and after) Happy Feet (pre-ICE).

Have to say, the film looks visually incredible.

Thing with their pipeline is they could have any app for the modelling, lighting, layout, etc, but I think its Maya because it links into renderman and they can probably find more decent modellers using Maya.

It's nice that they chose XSI over maya for animation though. I don't think there's anything "companion" about that at all.

You're obviously right, I used the "companion" reference as a sort of in-joke. :D
