how to create a ground fracture effect

hi , i need to create ground fracture effect ( something like in ice age movie ) and animate it......can anybody gimme a clue ........thanx a lot

Manually animating fragments could take a long time, better to do this procedurally.
You could use StudioNest Kratos & Momentum.
Been playing with this a little bit and its pretty nice.

There's this discussion on the XSIBase. The title "Brainstorming: animating a ground cr@cking" already implies it contains more general ideas about how to approach this, not so much ones on how to actually put such ideas into practice, but it might be helpful nonetheless (I hope).
And once you've found an approach, I'm sure this community (and all of the others) can provide (some) help perfecting it.
