We use FBX from Max to XSI. Be sure to select FBX version 2006 in the export options from Max. Otherwise we get problems. Sometimes the materials come over 100% transparent, and the specular is really high. But, that is easily fixed.

I don't know if this helps (or is even relevant), but there seems to have been a major change in FBX 2011:
Previously, FBX 2006, 2009 and 2010 releases have been based on FBX File Format version 6.1. FBX 2011 is the first release since 2006 to completely change the format of the technology.

And according to the Softimage User's Guide: "Crosswalk for FBX now uses FBX SDK 2011",
so that is probably why they even introduced an article in the Knowledge Base called
Rolling back to an older version of Crosswalk

Stay safe, sane & healthy!
