Alembic

Post by Hirazi Blue » 29 Jul 2010, 09:23

Sony Pictures Imageworks and Industrial Light & Magic announce a co-developed open source project titled Alembic.
Alembic is an open computer graphics interchange framework. Alembic distills complex, animated scenes into a non-procedural, application-independent set of baked geometric results. This ‘distillation’ of scenes into baked geometry is exactly analogous to the distillation of lighting and rendering scenes into rendered image data.
and
Alembic is focused on efficiently storing the computed results of complex procedural geometric constructions. It is very specifically NOT concerned with storing the complex dependency graph of procedural tools used to create the computed results.
The new open source software will be available in August.
Sounds fascinating and very useful...

That seems to go along with Katana. (I wish they´d make that one open source too :D )

Sounds like it would be difficult to 'mess with' once the rendering is done. I like to get into the mechanics of my scenes.
watch the game starts after you accept the part, to redirect your mind.
