"NVIDIA GPUs Provide Edge..."

Post by Hirazi Blue » 05 May 2010, 14:10

Stephen Blair referenced the following article on his Support Blog:
NVIDIA GPUs Provide Edge to 3D Animators Utilizing Autodesk Softimage 2011

It's a fascinating read:
This latest release of Autodesk Softimage 3D modeling and animation software enables real-time simulations using NVIDIA PhysX -- a powerful physics application programming interface (API), or 'engine', accelerated by NVIDIA Quadro(R) professional graphics processing units (GPUs) -- and NVIDIA CUDA, the architecture behind NVIDIA GPUs. These improved simulations include the ability to create more realistic water-related visual effects, lifelike characters, and explosions that behave with exceptional realism.- MY HIGHLIGHT -
Seems a bold statement, as only PhysX Rigid Bodies seem to be (more or less) exposed to SI2011 users. Seems they've got their stories/applications mixed up, as Max and Maya do seem to expose the whole PhysX package. But maybe I'm missing something here.

On a sidenote: The issue of "Hardware Accelerated PhysX" has been logged (by me :-$ ) for special attention by Softimage Support. Let's see how that plays out...
:D

Maybe it's the
accelerated by NVIDIA Quadro(R) professional graphics processing units
that's going to bite most of us.....

I doubt it. This press release comes from NVIDIA, who obviously want to sell their Quadro's.
The whole hardware acceleration should, if Softimage is to be believed,
work on all CUDA enabled cards, more or less recent Geforce's included.
That it actually doesn't seem to work (not even on my CUDA enabled Quadro 3700 FX) is a different story altogether
(but probably not fit for a press release... :D )
