Hi,
I received an email about Autodesk collections. The email has more information about the ending of new Perpetual Licenses for Suites (July 31st 2016), and it also had a link to their new 'Collections' coming. Just wanted to share...

I think I am just going to be sitting tight with my Maya with Softimage bundle, and just go from there.

Seems legit to me.

Re: Autodesk Collections
For what you get in the Collections, it is not a bad deal as you do have access to a lot of software. I am just not a fan of the rental method. I am on-the-fence of upgrading to the Ultimate Suite before this happens...who knows what might happen to Max in the future and/or if eventually I will be unable to run Softimage as the prior 3 versions usage might nix that, considering Softimage is no longer in the Suites. I was told that I would have access to the last 3 Versions of Softimage in the Ultimate Suite, but who really knows when that time actually comes.
I guess I have a couple of months to decide...

right, end of july Note that when you rent, you can also run 3 past versions like if you're on classic sub. You'll never get softimage with rental, though -- but since you're here I assume you already have it!Rez007 wrote:I guess I have a couple of months to decide...

I didn't know about previous versions also while via renting, so thank you for sharing that. I have "Maya with Softimage" as I mentioned earlier, but if I were to do anything it would be before the full rental method takes place - upgrading to the Perpetual license version of the Ultimate Suite and then staying on the classic maintenance subs thereafter.luceric wrote:right, end of july Note that when you rent, you can also run 3 past versions like if you're on classic sub. A question that you may be able to answer...does Autodesk view prior version usage for the Ultimate Suite in regards to:
1.) Each individual software version that is in the Suite? or
2.) The total collection version of the entire Suite?
There is a big difference between the two, as the first method would allow the usage/access to Softimage many years down the road, but the latter option would cancel Softimage out from usage with version year 2021.
I think it is leaning more toward the first option I wrote from other answers I have received, but I could never find anything concrete in writing from Autodesk...like in a FAQ or something. Thanks for the help.

Re: Autodesk Collections
Hello, Maurice has stated that it will end up being #1, but you should check that with him. I do not speak for my employer, but myself, as a Softimage licensee, I would not take the risk. Let me explain why: Softimage asks and gets an "Ultimate 2015" suite license, not a "Softimage 2015" license. Softimage 2015 R2 asks and gets a "Maya 2016 with Softimage" license, not a "Softimage 2015" license. The Suite licenses do not include individual licenses for individual products, it's just one bundle license that the products are coded to ask for, and they are not programmed to look for future versions of the license.
I think it will probably be easier in a few years to call support and ask them to transfer your Maya with Softimage 2016 license to another machine, then to ask to transfer your "Ultimate Suite 2020" plus also a license to continue to run your Softimage 2015 R2 license. There are too many ways where I can see that second case blocking somewhere, because it's non-standard. So you if you want to upgrade to the Ultimate Suite, calculate if you really need both Maya and Max and if that's worth the extra maintenance price, and perhaps prepare that you might not be safe with your continued access to Softimage. Personally, I would go off subscription to protect my XSI license, then and in the future rent whatever I need and tax-deduct and bill that one to my clients or employers.

I'm still hopeful someday Softimage will appear at the Autodesk Exchange to download and use for fun!

Re: Autodesk Collections
Thanks Luceric, I really appreciate your opinion on this and the information you have provided. This is kind of where I have been for a bit now - the uncertainty, and I have been trying to think of, and decipher, any possible way where something might go wrong and I will loose access to Softimage. I made a game all using Softimage (in my signature) and I have a pharma project that keeps coming up every-so-often, this is kind of why I would need to retain that access to Softimage. Every option so far, except for what I have currently "Maya with Softimage," comes up with a slight chance of Softimage not working in the future. I have also been in touch with Maurice and he has been kind to provide answers as well.luceric wrote:Hello, Maurice has stated that it will end up being #1, but you should check that with him. So far from what I read, Autodesk is just planning on stopping new perpetual licenses and all information I have received stated that if I am on maintenance subs (classic subs) I will continue to get all future updates in perpetuity. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to stay on my current maintenance with my "Maya with Softimage" bundle for as long as I can? On Autodesk's Facebook page they said that Softimage is indefinitely perpetual with Maya or Max (depending on what the user chose in their transition direction.) Do you think this is still a safe bet?
https://www.facebook.com/AutodeskSoftimage/?fref=nf (First entry on page - March 7th 2014)
The minute Autodesk forces all perpetual license holders to rental, then I will stop my subs for sure so I can keep my licenses and then may rent as you suggested per project. I hope Autodesk never forces current perpetual licenses to rental, as that would not be very nice, but who knows, everything seems to be moving too fast these past couple of years. I think if Softimage would have been able to be broken out separately a while back, this all can have been a none issue.
Your thoughts on staying on current maintenance (classic subs) with the link I provided above? Thanks for your help again, it is much appreciated.

Re: Autodesk Collections
It does seems safe and cheaper (compared to renting) right now to stay on sub with "Maya with Softimage". it's upgrading to the Suite I'm wary about, a product doesn't mention Softimage anywhere in the name. This is speculation, but they might retire the Maya with Softimage subscripttion SKU in a few years, though and convert you to just Maya subscription, but they will tell you that in advance. In the mean time you'd be saving money vs renting Maya.
