TORONTO: March 14, 2016 - SideFX is pleased to announce that Houdini Engine Indie is now available for free (previously $99). Independent game devs and CG artists can now freely load Houdini Digital Assets built using Houdini’s procedural node-based workflow into apps such as Unity, UE4, Maya and Cinema4D.

"This is exciting news for indie developers who want to enhance the procedural features in Unreal Engine 4," said Epic Games CTO Kim Libreri. "Houdini Engine Indie brings amazing power to the table which makes it possible for smaller teams to more easily achieve AAA-quality results."

Houdini Engine Indie works with all of the Houdini Engine plug-ins including Unity, UE4, Autodesk Maya, Cinema 4D and Autodesk 3DS Max. These plug-ins let game devs load Houdini Digital Assets which can be created in Houdini Indie or downloaded from the Unity Asset Store and the Orbolt 3D Smart Asset store.

Anyone knows why they list for 3DS Max? As far as i know it is user made connection that has severe limitations.

Update: Note that is not Houdini Indie that went free but Houdini Engine Indie like Mathaeus says and i thank him for correcting me. Title was corrected too.

It's Houdini *Engine* that goes free, as plugin for Houdini Indie. So, Houdini Indie seems to be still around 200$ yearly. For moment I was thinking about new cellphone instead of this year Indie subscription, but nothing of that :).

Afaik it's Maya and UE4 version of Houdini engine that is developed by Side Effects, c4d version is developed by Maxon, and Max version is an user initiative, as you said. Now why they listed Max, let's say that in Houdini, ''programmer friendly" world, implementation or new feature could be anything between just a basic 'ground' for coders to build something on top, or full functionality for end user, usually is something in between.
