Holiday discount 3D Coat

Post by Hirazi Blue » 31 Dec 2015, 11:06

Noticed this a little late, sorry, but the offer still stands until the 7th of January. ;)
In the light of upcoming Holiday season Pilgway studio is happy to announce a special Christmas discount on 3D-Coat V4.
From December 20 until January 7, 2016 we are offering $100 off on 3D-Coat Professional and $20 off on Educational version.
Check out our new web-site 3dcoat.com with 3D gallery and the Buy now page to make use of this special discount.
(Quoted from here)

On the home page of the 3D Coat website there is a countdown timer indicating how long the offer is still valid from their (timezone) perspective...

There have been many positive reviews on this forum alone - search for "3d*coat"
(due to a quirk of our search engine, you cannot enter search terms of less than 4 characters 8-}).

One of the recent ones was by Maximus in this post:

- Last but not least, 3dcoat. This package is surprisingly amazing, you get sculpting, crazy UV algorithm for unwrapping, amazing painting with great material library, works with both cuda and openGL, you get painting, you get retopology for 370$. Im oriented to buy 3d coat to be honest, i am watching lots of videos on youtube and i'm totally shocked about how underrated this software is. It has some surface sculpting tools (you basically sculpt with splines and the chop off the geometry on voxels) that not even Zbrush has. Some tools are so good really.. worth a try to give it a shot.

Painting also is very nice, no lag, the pentable is very fluid. takes a bit more to master because its a swiss knife, it can do from sculpting to painting, retopo, etc. Id highly recommend you to try 3d coat.

Overall i'm sticking with mudbox and 3dcoat, they have the most powerful and simlpe painting system out of the market. I just dont like when developers tend to overcomplicate things that should be easy. There is no need to add 120312304 options for easy stuff.

Used its auto re-topology for things like in pic. For this one original is output of some Houdini's VDBs, but it could be anything, let's say a bunch of overlapped meshes of any resolution, because 3DC converts everything into voxels, before autopo process. It takes some time to compute, around 15 mins for final of 120 quads, here, but it was a completely automatic process, without any assistance (obviously it won't be funny to draw the curvature, here).
Other than that, texture painting is nice, even before few years it had support for many 'extra' features, materials on clusters, mirroring. Whatever I wanted when it comes to output (displacement re-scaling and so on). In case the scale of imported thing doesn't match to 3DC rules, it's able to fit into own scale and export back in original scale.

Has a lot of nice features for voxel sculpting. Usable curves, sort of bezier patches and so on, but definitively is not able to match the zBrush speed. I don't have a real experience with 3DC sculpting.
For tasks like auto re-topology or texture painting, has a procedures guided by wizards, sometime these procedures weren't easy to figure out, but, once I've 'agreed to follow', it became a rare app which allows to do something usable, without knowing anything about the rest.

Not so nice point are exactly these procedures. Somehow, author takes a bit too much care about everything, same method is sometimes repeated in various ways.
It's much more 'logically' organized than zB, but without zBrush sculpting power. I think author made a small mistake, believing in CUDA story and almost brute force voxelization, instead to go with 'creative 2d - 3dtrickery' like zB people.

nit picking edit: 120K quads, not 120 quads :)

Just bought it, but on steam (wich has a discount from the winter sale).

I had instaled the trial version and tested mainly the sculpting tools. I wanted a good program for sculpting, but I cant afford Zbrush right now (its 3x more expensive) and 3D Coat seams to be a very good alternative.
