The GIMP developers have announced a new build 2.9.2 with several long-awaited improvements:
GEGL is GIMP’s new image processing engine. (…) While a few advanced features of GEGL such as non-destructive editing are planned to be exposed in GIMP at a later development stage (v3.2 and onwards), with 2.9.2, you can already benefit from certain aspects of the new engine, such as:
• 16/32bit per color channel processing
• Basic OpenEXR support
• On-canvas preview for many filters
• Experimental hardware-accelerated rendering and processing via OpenCL
• Higher-quality downscaling
Additionally, native support for PNG, TIFF, PSD, and FITS files in GIMP has been upgraded to read and write 16/32bit per color channel data.

So far there doesn’t seem to be a build for Windows nor Mac yet. The official download page can be found
here.

2.9.x are considered unstable/dev-preview releases and I doubt there will be any official build until 2.10 (stable).

It needn't be official builds...
This site already has some "experimental build" online,
It sort of works, but is highly unstable, as was to be expected...
I have updated my builds as well. My builds are pulled directly from the master sources and hence are usually not in synch with the release version and consquently have a higher number. The installer, the Mac version, and the portable versions have been updated. Also, I am providing a portable Windows version with color management patches provided by Elle Stone. She has been working with the developers to get these patches incorporated into the master trunk. G'MIC has also been updated to the git pull from yesterday.

Thx. The path seems to be nice, lets see where Krita will be too at that time.

As an alternative to the 2.9.3 build offered by
Partha (see my previous post), I have found
this site, which offers "nightly builds" of the dev-version 2.9... ;)
