thingsyou hate about softimage
now that we'll be getting no more fixes or updates, what do you absolutely hate about softimage that needs fixing?
Shape manager can use some updates.
I use base shape for all my shapes. yet every now and then, when I make model changes, the pre set shapes will become all jumble up and useless and i'll have to redoo them all over again like I spent the entire morning doing now.
also, freezing the model sometimes causes shape manager shapes to not work anymore, hence having to do them all over again.
I also hate having to freeze the model to get rid of some changes in the stack and it causes to loose your enveloped points, making the model stuck in whatever pose the skeleton was in at the time you froze it.
could speed things up tremendously.

The Autodesk part first
(
)
and then
,,
lot of small things that never got fixed for ages as evryone was expecting. I can name a few but thats not the point.
I rather like to recall the memories of old users on a xsibase thread, that got 20 pages, because of the amazing feedback, in just a few days (just before the site shutdown), And that happened cause an AD developer (a nice guy actually ) steped in, to ask for bugs and improovments.
But all that energy got just.. poooof ,,wasted,,, eerrm i mean it gets capitalized now in to migration...
Sorry but i dont feel like hating, on code that is written many years ago. Yes i can be angry sometimes on some tools that slow me down etc, but i dont hate it rly.

Nope, that would indeed be the point of this specific threadmc_axe wrote:I can name a few but thats not the point.
and this can be rather cathartic in itself...

lots of tiny things like tool modes getting stuck when releasing hotkeys in the wrong order ... but only hope now is a little source code leak ;)

If it is catharsis from aaaall that waiting into the frozen era of Softimage, yes i can try to contribute!Hirazi Blue wrote:Nope, that would indeed be the point of this specific threadmc_axe wrote:I can name a few but thats not the point.

As Bullit said deformers ,, yes but the bend deformer... that can be the flagship of this topic. I mean Jeeez! we were rly lucky that someone made a proper deformer in ICE. Was it that hard... ??
On the same motive.. let’s go in some forgotten old places..
(I always like to mention,, cause no1 uses it )..
The UV editor!
Have you noticed that tools working on polygons, doesn’t actually work inside the UV Editor, i mean polygons and UVs are already indexed..somewhere right? So why not proper implementation within the editor as well? Example in the UV Editor: The extend selection tool: Just select a polygon,, then ctrl-shift click a distant one ... doesn’t select the polygons in between.. (Same for edges etc). Loop selection (Double click) doesn’t work within the editor etc...
Implementing those selection tools, within the UV Editor,, and adding a button to consider (Islandic) limits!! ... would be a cheap and amazing improvement! But,,,all that goodies from modeling, get once again wasted ..
Another monstrosity is the use of proportional tool within the UV editor, (it is the only place where you can hate that tool) it doesn’t respect islands so in a tight situation.. (tightlypackedislands), you just destroying the neighborhood.. Additionally in complex geometry’s it gets slow as hell (for some stupid reason i bet ) + you need to jump in a normal viewport, in order to resize the (invisible ><) brush,

I'm curious, what do you find a PITA about the hair?Hirazi Blue wrote:The "royal pain" that is laughingly called "XSI Hair".
For grooming, I find it quite good. Certainly not the best around, but decent. They even used it for "98% human" or whatever was called that Ape campaign with the chimp.
Now, if you were talking about simulating that hair, that I can relate to
What I hate about XSI apart from the fact that's EOL?
Well, I can't think of much. Honestly. There are lots of things that could be improved if not downright fixed, but hate? That's a strong word I reserve for things that really deserve it.
The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools.

Outdated Direct X / OpenGL support
Outdated realtime shaders
Mental ray support not following Mental Ray capabilities (used to be one or two update behind, but we were left behind for years now)
Open VDB / PTEX support
Lack of brush based / real time texture painting in the viewport
A buggy wacom tablet support
HQV 2.0
Let's not forget this list of nuggets

Grooming is about the only reason to keep coming back to it IMHO. Simulation is very bad, its fixed amount of segments is pretty annoying and they might have exposed the guide hairs to ICEMcNistor wrote:I'm curious, what do you find a PITA about the hair?Hirazi Blue wrote:The "royal pain" that is laughingly called "XSI Hair".

High Quality.
I'm not even sure what it does, but sometimes I hit it instead of textured and it either takes forever ( a minute or more) before I can do anything else, or crashes the program entirely.

Re: thingsyou hate about softimage
HQ is definatelly one of the worst additions to XSI ever, cause it came in parallel with the Maya 2.0 viewport..
That made clear to alot of users, that this company doesnt rly care to take advantage of both Apps, Maya was alrdy the fav child, no co-op between two softwares development teams was happening, so alot ppl considered it alrdy EOL.
However i use HQ sometimes because it dosnt have buggy AA, when im doing modeling or UVs. I turn it on just to have a look.
It is not so slow with all the other rediculus 'features' off. (and if you have like lots of ram) and just couple of lights with no shadows.
AO and DOF even shadow maps... are so bad.. that im still wondering how,, something so bad (esp compared to Maya 2 viewport),, made it to a final product.. with the history of XSI.
It just makes me think that desisions like this, was driven by pure hate and desprespect against SI , it is like they were trying to invent reasons to kill it.

Nothing good can come out of getting worked up with things that don't work well in softimage, imho. I don't know why you're doing this..

Re: thingsyou hate about softimage
It’s very much a matter of opinion, obviously. Personally I find this take on things rather refreshing as the user base has been focusing too much on the things they perceived to be great about Softimage, which at this point in time is just as inconsequential.
