Microsoft HoloLens and Autodesk.

Post by Rez007 » 07 May 2015, 17:19

I do not know if this should be placed here in "News" or moved to "General Discussion"...

I ran across this:

http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft- ... -autodesk/

It seems very interesting. However, near the bottom of the article there is an area about how Microsoft inked a deal with Autodesk to bring modelling and 3D printing (Spark) to Windows 10 users. Maybe someone from Autodesk could please elaborate a bit more?

Would this be Maya LT coming to Windows 10 for everyone? If so, what happens to Maya LT rental and Maya in general, or is this something completely different?

I think it is nice to be able to bring software to users, but at some point, I fell, you will hit a mass-overload and over saturate the market. Take a look at mobile...

For me it looks more like AD Fusion 360 coming for everyone, looks conceptually much closer to this story, than Maya. Fusion 360 is by the way a nice piece of software, has built in former t-spline addon, together with standard NurbS stuff, like filleting. If so, it will be an 'attack' to other affordable CAD modeling software.

Posted from the article:

--
"Separately, it's also done a deal with 3D modelling software maker Autodesk to bring the company's 3D models to HoloLens.

It will be possible to use Autodesk's Autodesk Maya and Fusion 360 to build 3D models that can viewed in HoloLens. The idea is to help game developers and filmmakers speed up the development of new offerings, or to help engineers develop full-scale models during the design phase of product development."

Yes, it would be an attack on CAD software, but they seem to also mention Maya. If it does become free (if 'free' is what they are referring to) for Windows 10 users, then Blender is basically gone. While I like innovation and accessibility of software to others, this "lets give everything away for free" mentality, really hinders people trying to make a living off a profession - not just the users but also developers. When things go "free," the perceived value of skill and software goes down the tank.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I found only one 'free' in article, and this is not Maya, neither Fusion 360. "Autodesk is also lending a hand on Windows 10, embedding its Spark 3D printing software in Microsoft's OS. Autodesk said its Spark APIs will be able for free to the Microsoft developer community."

You are right about that, maybe I put the cart before the horse. I just found the mention of Maya, specifically, in reference to that article to be a bit of an eyebrow raiser. To me, why would they even mention that when, I would most likely think, that you would be able to use Maya anyway to make models to be viewed by HaloLens and Windows 10 users, just as you could with Max, Houdini, Modo, etc.? I just found the whole 'making a deal with Autodesk to bring modeling and printing to Windows 10 and HaloLens,' maybe as a foreshadowing of things to come. Speculation, of course.

The Spark platform is basically open source, so anyone can tap into it. So adding it to Windows 10 kinda makes sense to allow more people to get into 3D printing. I think I read somewhere that HP have also looked into or are adopting support for Spark.

Spark is this http://spark.autodesk.com/
that's what would be built into windows 10.

Thanks guys. I think integrating Spark is cool and does makes sense. Do you have any opinions, or knowledge, to why they might have mentioned Maya and Fusion at all, in the specific manner - and context - as they did? Or am I just looking into something more than what may be really there?

They just said that Maya will be able to author hololens content, we have a prototype of that. We also demoed a separate Maya multitouch prototype at the Microsoft's Build conference last week. There is nothing else to read into that.

Sorry for late post into this, but i am really interested in this. Can you please answer to one question? Will 3dsMax also be able to author for HoloLens? After all the anger faded, i am thinking of purchasing Max/Maya with Softimage before 1st February next year. I am leaning towards 3dsMax, but if it doesn't get such innovations(already we don't have Bifrost on Max), i will go with Maya. HoloLens will be huge for next few years, so i want to plan ahead a bit. Thank you in advance for your answer.
