Please Help - Categorize Apps View in Windows 8.1

Hello,

I realize this is way off topic, but I do not know where to find out the answer and after checking the internet and talking with Microsoft (support - which didn't lead to anything) directly, I have a question that I am hoping someone can help me with if possible. I am new to Windows 8.1 and I am having trouble organizing the Apps view. The area I am talking about is when you login to the Start menu, you then click the lower left arrow that brings you down to the Apps list (Apps View). If I have it set to "list by name" I get some programs that are listed in different areas. For instance, some programs which are Dell products, might fall under the "Dell" category label and some might fall under the letter "D" instead. How would I arrange these shortcuts to sit in the categories I want them to? Such as, maybe having all Dell products only sit under the "Dell" category.

This happens with Autodesk too. I have an "Autodesk," "Autodesk Maya 2015," and "Autodesk Softimage 2015" category labels. What if I want all of those to sit only in a single "Autodesk" labeling. Or if I want to create a custom category?

If anyone has any help in regards to this what would be appreciated.

Like with the Start menu in Win7, I never really bothered to keep that organized. At some point it becomes a big fat mess.
Press the Winkey and start typing, the app will show up. Same with the new big Win8 Start screen.

If you have apps you use a lot, just create groups, add the apps to the startscreen and move them into these new groups.
All the other less used app... Winkey + start typing.

Unless you really really want to clean all that up, it's probably easier to hunt down those shortcut folders, and rename/move the ones that are bugging you.
After that log out/ in again to see the changes.

I think I will end up doing what you said. When I try following that link I posted, for some reason it still doesn't work with the shortcuts...Windows 10 will be out in September-ish, I believe, so things will change again at that time anyway. Thanks for the help!

Hi,

It's always about personal preferences ;-)
There have been some small changes between Win8 and 8.1, so it could be some of the stuff suggested in that article is slightly off. Not sure though, haven't read it actually...

It is a small annoyance where when I used to right-click on a Start/App Menu tile I would get a context bar that appears at the bottom of the screen where I can pin/unpin, etc., now all I get is an old-school context menu that pops up next to my mouse. Apparently, it is a forced changed that happens in a Windows 8.1 update. It is not a big deal, but it would be nice to be able to find these settings somewhere where I can revert back to the way I liked it before. If yourself, or anyone, knows how to revert it back to the old way that would be great. Otherwise, I would just use it as is and press the space bar to bring up that menu if desired.
