Indeed - also worth noting the procedural texturing application "Substance Painter" has currently a promo going http://store.steampowered.com/app/273390/ (42 Euro/49 $)
20th of the price of Mari, better in some parts (proceduralism, non-destructive, particle brushes), worse in some (4k "only", no tiled uvs, lower polycount supported)

But that's "on Steam" and that's not a platform serious DCCs should be associated with IMHO.

It's also the indie version with commercial use limited to those with income less than $10k.

Yes, sorry, it's the indie version, forgot to mention this limitation. About Steam I have no opinion at all, so that wouldn't stop me.

steam.. is so much better imho than every software having its owns licensing system with a collection of secret handshakes and limitations. Just log onto steam on any computer, download the app, and you're a go..

Re: "Flash sale" Modo & Mari
why not? If you buy a new pc, or a laptop, or if you move to another country, instead of carrying all your dvds and keys of every software and plugin you own, you just install steam and download everything with a few clicks and they take care of the codes for you. Gamers love it for that reason, and every software should be like that.Hirazi Blue wrote:But that's "on Steam" and that's not a platform serious DCCs should be associated with IMHO.

Re: "Flash sale" Modo & Mari
Steam is total crap in terms of assistance and customer care.
Stay away from it as much as you can.
Once i had an email address i was using for years because of work. That domain expired and i the process to change your actual email on Steam is simply and utterly retarded.
They send you the pwd and mail change reset to your actual mail (which i dont have access anymore, hence why i need to change my mail).
Then i contacted support and they told me that nothing could been done. AFter one month i needed to buy something off steam and i try again. Same story, after i contacted support they asked me to send them an ID + real life picture to verify i was the owner of that mail.. Absolutely incredible and stupid. Not even a Bank account requires such stupid measures to change a mail.
Let alone the platform itself is a pain in the butt and very buggy. Maybe now its different? i dont know. but I sure as hell will never ever install Steam again.
Back to topic, i'd seriously feel fishy about whats going on with The Foundry and this discount is a bit scary tbh.. what if you gonna end up with a dead product again ?

Being honest, they have this 40% off sale every end of a year.
And I love Steam for my games acc. I can put funds in my wallets, etc.
Never used their support tho.

As MauricioPC said, discount is every year in this time, sometimes sometime in summer, sometime is also around release. Modo license is still "true permanent", once you have it, you can transfer it to another machine without any assistance. However they introduced some types of subscriptions, for Indie version, also for 'collective' pack of apps.Maximus wrote: Back to topic, i'd seriously feel fishy about whats going on with The Foundry and this discount is a bit scary tbh.. what if you gonna end up with a dead product again ?
Definitively it will be interesting, what will happen in near future.

Re: "Flash sale" Modo & Mari
The only reason I don't even consider Modo now is because I talked with some artists who do concept art and they say Modo is very poor on high poly meshes, something that Max or Maya goes with ease.Mathaeus wrote:As MauricioPC said, discount is every year in this time, sometimes sometime in summer, sometime is also around release. Re: "Flash sale" Modo & Mari
Depends what you mean as high poly. I have models up to several hundred thousand polygons and never had an issue. If you not working on a model but need it to be visible, loading it as a static mesh greatly improves the performance of everything else.
That being said there is definite room for improvement in the viewport performance. Polygon selection on the top end can be sluggish in very large scenes.

Thanks for the feedback Angus. Good to know.
I'll probably be taking some workshop on high poly characters. Maybe I should try doing it in Modo.

Re: "Flash sale" Modo & Mari
Simple example, let's say I have 900k single polymesh:
Modo/XSI: I can select components, move, extrude, bevel etc., slower but it works.
Max/Maya/Blender: impossible to edit, viewport constantly freezes (also Maya freezes for 1–2 sec even if you just select that object).
(that's on my PC)
Another test, medium scene with 3000 low-to-medium poly objects:
Modo: fps drops and navigation is not so fluid, scene occupies ~40–70% more memory than other packages.
XSI: faster that Modo.
Maya/Max: navigation is fast as with empty scene.

Re: "Flash sale" Modo & Mari
Major problem being the number of objs in a scene. Kind of like C4D problems.
Thx.
