Exocortex Crate goes open source

Exocortex has "placed" Crate, their Alembic suite in the "open source'.

while I am not a super fan of "free" software (it normally means it gets no support and/or development), they should do the same with the latest momentum, while under normal conditions I would just pony up and buy it, I never got the feeling in this case that they finished it up and squashed all the bugs.

This is great news, specially for those who haven't upgraded their software. I'm downloading right now.

I wonder if they are releasing it for free now that all major 3D software has Alembic support. Has anyone used Crate to tell if it's better than the native versions?

Can anybody help me with the installation? I'm running with my head against a wall. I placed the crate folder in my workgroup. Nothing happens.

I tried the full crate folder (with all the stuff for al programs) or just the SI 2014 one.

When I open SI nothing shows up in the file import menu.

Is there the need for some funky env variable or something else?

I installed everything in my workgroup. Neither the Alembic import in the file menu shows up, nor the compounds load. Do I need to point something else to the files?

Solved!

The Windows 7 folder from the Crate directory needs to go into the C: directory. Point your workgroup to the SI2014 folder and it works. Strange that the dir can't be moved to ones own workgroup.
