Beginner's question about Global Illumination

Post by agrmrs » 25 Mar 2010, 16:30

hi friends, i'm following softimage mental ray intro tute by i3d tutorials ...... today i followed a tute about GI intro and another tute regarding using GI to light up a scene ...... this scene got 3 spot lights with area shadows ....i turned on GI in lights as well as in render region > all options.... also turned on the rebuild photon map option too ........but when i render it , it doesen't seem to be GI there ..... also in that tutor's video i could see the blotchy effect there clearly ( since no tweaking hasn't been done to GI yet )....this should work since i'm following the exact method & steps the tutor does .....have i done some thing wrong ? :-o thanx :)

I'm not fully routined with GI, but heres what I would looked at:

Try increasing the GI intensity to something redicolous, and see if that does anything. Coudl be it's too low (that part I still dont understand - GI intensity vs light intensity).
Make sure the GI lights are spotlights.
Make sure the GI lights are positioned close to where the GI should take effect - for instance, place them just outside the windows - not miles away.

i put a basic material to all the objects in the scence [ sofa, walls etc ] then i took a render .....surprised :-o it worked very well !

.....but i have no clue why it isn't happening with textures :( ...... but again when the scene opens it gives me a messege like below...i think some textures are missing or replaced

thanx :)

If you open up the "Scene_Apartment__Appartement_GI_Finished" scene, you'll see they end up with "slightly" :p higher values for "Global Illumination - Energy - Intensity" (25000), "Number of emitted photons" (2000000) and the "soft_light" - Intensity (1500) and that's only for one of the three spotlights present in the scene... (and these settings are repeated for all three of them) *-:)

The orange coloured warning does not seem to be something to worry about...
Stay safe, sane & healthy!
