The Foundry apparently is planning to release a non-commercial version of Nuke Studio for free, that won't be watermarked, early next year.

However, some restrictions remain: data – including Nuke scripts and gizmos – is encrypted on export, so only the non-commercial edition can read the files; and Python scripting is limited.

Output resolution will also be limited to HD, and “2D format support disabled for DNxHD, MPEG”.

Was kinda hoping they would have changed their minds at NAB and say that Nuke NC would also be available to EDU institutions. Sadly not. Fusion 7 is and Fusion 8 will be out Q3 on Mac, Linux and windows , so a pretty easy decision for us.

I'm pretty comfortable learning comp in Fusion. If the day comes when a Nuke opportunity appears, I'll download it and try it.

But for now, I'm all Fusion. BMD is a lot more sympathetic to the freelancer/student.
