Re: Siggraph 2014 Topic
Thanks for opening this topic, I was planning something similar, but hadn't gotten around to it yet.
One thing Siggraph will hopefully bring is some more clarity about akeytsu, especially on the topic "rigging, what rigging?"
To me personally as a "SoftMaya" user it's interesting that Pixar will apparently release its new Renderman sometime around Siggraph,
which sports the all-new free non-commercial license (hence my heightened interest, quite frankly),
but which new pricing model in general might spark some renewed interest from the commercial side.
And the presentation(s?) from our friends over at Fabric Engine will undoubtedly be fun to watch closely...
(@FabricPaul - do you stream or at least record and quickly release?)

Our full schedule is here: http://s2014.siggraph.org/
We'll record what we can at the show and upload, but it might take a week or two to get everything up - last year we recorded demos in the hotel room and uploaded, which seemed to work ok.

Re: Siggraph 2014 Topic
A quick follow up to Paul's post.
I'll be presenting Kraken, an OpenSource Rigging API that is cross DCC and utilized Fabric Splice at the Fabric User Group. More details in the coming weeks but should be very interesting for Softimage and Maya folks alike.

Sounds interesting. Have you released it or it's an announce?EricTRocks wrote:I'll be presenting Kraken, an OpenSource Rigging API that is cross DCC and utilized Fabric Splice at the Fabric User Group. *also, destructions in the video looks like any other generic voronoi shattering*

I'll demo the current state of the system. We're still building it out but it's in good form currently. Closed beta will take a few months after Siggraph as well then will be released after we're happy with the functionality and state.

Eric,
This looks awesome! You said Softimage and Maya peeps would like, but since it's cross DCC, maybe there's finally hope for a proper rigging solution for Max?

Re: Siggraph 2014 Topic
It will be extendable to Max if someone wants to do it. I know nothing about Max so it's not coming from me.
That said, once Max has Splice (soon) I don't see it taking that long to port Kraken to Max. A few days... that said, Kraken will still be evolving a bit but this is the cool thing about Kraken and Splice.
OK, I'm saying too much. Wait a few weeks and you'll have everything you need to know.

Hi Eric,
Congrats! Kraken looks like a very interesting project
I'd love to ask you a few questions about the project: in the first announcement (fabric/softimage mailing list) Paul said that Kraken will be open source, Is this still the case? Have you decided the license yet? Are there any plans for a public repository?
Thank you!

Re: Siggraph 2014 Topic
Hey Cesar, yes it will be Open Source!
It's currently closed just so we can nail down the design and clean things up before we send it off into the wild. It will be on Git Hub. Not sure about what Open Source license just yet, just need to double check but I think we'll be able to do it with the BSD New / 3 Clause.
