Slice or cut

Post by ajhorvath » 31 Jan 2010, 04:31

Hello,
How would I slice or cut a geometry inXSI with precise angle control(by degree)
I want my geometry cut at 32.5 degree. How can I do this?
I don,t see any numeric angle options in slice or knife.
And I can't fine a cut geometry option.
Please help!
Thanks

edit: after deleting my original suggestion using booleans, I looked at the User's Guide some more and found that you can define a custom cutting plane for slicing, which you should be able to rotate precisely (i.e. numerically)

XSIDocs: Polygon Modeling > Modeling Polygons & Polygon Meshes > Knifing and Slicing Polygons > Slicing Options > Specifying the Cutting Plane

:) yes, if you use the Knife tool, you can do that. it's pretty handy if you use snaps (ctrl key on keyboard) and select a bunch of polygons first to isolate what to cut from what's not...

that leads to my frustration at trying to figure out a procedure to emulate the cut tool from 3ds max on xsi, that's preety much like the cut in xsi but runs across multiple poligons with a couple of clicks, figuring out the best path. any bright ideas? wanna move the thread to the apropriate section hirazi? ;)

I'm not sure, where you want me to move this thread, craft.
The imaginary "things even MAX does better" forum or
the just as imaginary "things that should be included in SI before 2018 (but probably never will)" forum! :D

BTW: have you tried the wonderful "add edge tool"?
(mind you: I have never worked with MAX, so I don't really know what I'm talking about... 8-} )

Thanks for the help.
It's not very simple but it does work.
I wish XSI had spline tools Like Max.

Yeah 3ds max cut has this nice feature
on other hand Max cut is fucked up since 3d studio max 1.0 with numerous bugs that applies to all max raycast tools. inserting new vertexes on another vertexes. inserting vertexes not where you clicked. inserting vertexes on other side of mesh. etc...

If you want precision in modelling, I can recommend NURbs and Rhino 3d.
And yes xsi curve tools are simply awful. but that was said 1000 times before

The truth is that I really would love to use just one software for everything.
I am trying to figure out what that software is.
I hope its XSI,I really like the look and feel of it.

I started with Lightwave and Maya after then Max and now XSI.
So far Max is the best and very fast Modeling soft for me but XSI is coming up.

hahahah i'd say "A) he imaginary things even MAX does better" :))

naw really, how about programming? that's what i had in mind but now it's maybe better start a new topic.

add edge tool: imagine you got to cut a line through 80 polygons not in a loop, and you don't want it to be a straight cut. max's approach to edge cutting does it in two clicks. As Origin stated max's cut is, as the whole app, messed up big time though. If only i could find a way to mess up XSI without performing a decent cut through many edges with the power of my will.... =p~

How about "split edges (with split control)", which seems to be able to take all selected edges into account and only split these (even around corners)? The ordinary "split edge" only seems to split edges along parallel edges, while the "...with split control" tool does things slightly "better"... ;)
