Concave Hull Rigid Bodies Particles with ICE ?

Post by sputnikk » 19 Dec 2013, 08:56

Hello ! First happy to find a forum replacement for xsi-base. I'm coming back to Softimage after few years 3dsmax + blender. And i'm learning, testing ICE.

Question is :
For a demo projet, the goal is to simulate a fall of chairs on the ground. Idea was to simulate this with ICE, but perhaps it isn't possible, because chairs are concave hulls (beetween legs ie). But that's my question. Can i make it with ICE or should i use "traditional" Simulate for achieving it ? I want to send a lot of chair objects ;)

Here is a printscreen of my tests with the concave volume and the ICE node :

RBD type of instance shape is set to Convex Hull (Bullet RBD Only)

So it is possible to make this simple simulation with ice ? Thks.

If you split any component of the chairs as a convex object like a box you don't have that issue.

Hello and thanks for your answer. Could you give me the way to achieve those idea ? So how to link splitted convex parts together to recreate the whole rigid object.

You are supposed to make a parent and children and in instance shape node select object and children and also convex hull RBD's.

But in a fast test i have done it is full of bugs with interpenetrations and errors. The result seems to bizzarrely depend of what parent you select and was unable to get a reliable result even building another bigger chair. Maybe they fixed the bugs in new versions.

I didn't saved it. It was a box for each leg and box for the seat and a box for the ground so nothing elaborated.

You have to use the "exact shape" switch on the "simulate bullet rigid body"

Exact shape only exist for the receiving body not for the instance/particle object. And the bullet convex particle instance object isn't working with parent/children like it should.

I don't know if someone released some compound to do RBDs.

The only alternative for the i think is the old physx RBD , but then lacks ICE, or going Momentum/Kratos which is paid, if he can find an old non-paid version it might work also.
