Syflex "on ICE" tutorials?

Post by Hirazi Blue » 15 Dec 2013, 23:39

As I am finally getting around to use Syflex, I wonder, if there already are any useful (beginner?) tutorials about "Syflex on ICE" available, maybe/preferably one that also tackles the question, why to use the ICE variant over the non-ICE variety?

I don't think there are any. If I remember correctly there were some videos showing what could be done.

The reason as to WHY to use it is simple. ICE. ICE allows you to manipulate the data streams that are feeding in and out of it Syflex nodes. ICE is also multi-threaded and I'm not sure if there non-ICE version is or not. The newer versions of Softimage have better implementations and features to manipulate the data so that may be some info that is useful.

I was thinking of doing some syflex tutorials.
One of the very best things about using ICE is that you can change the base mesh without having to start from scratch, you can easily add clusters etc and of course, you can make compounds of your favourite setups and settings and apply them easily.
There are a few annoying omissions in ICE version such as rescale, which is really useful, but overall it's a lot more useful, especially with the per-point additions in 2014. It's just a shame that there is an update bug if you wish to animate that. (and I'd like to see more per point stuff exposed.)

Thank you both!
And @Pooby: such a tutorial would be much appreciated
(and not just by me, I reckon).

On a side-note:
why is the non-ICE Syflex documentation still not part of the User's Guide "proper"?

Maybe it wasn't written by the Softimage team and implemented by the Syflex dev? Same goes with the true Mental Ray docs I believe.

It might be a good idea also to check the samples ICE-Syflex files.

Very interesting
Do ICE combined with Syflex allow a kind of Gator transfer properties to another mesh regarding the switching of the base mesh? or does it just replace the base mesh by adapting the geometry?
Anyway some tutorials are welcome!

No I just mean that if you change the mesh, by remodelling, then the cloth will still work, whereas the old one would go screwy. Its also easy to just copy the ICE tree to another object, whereas you couldnt do that with the old
