Hardware specs for Softimage 2014

Hey guys,

I would like some help. As of today, I have this computer (specs below), bought for gaming purposes last year. I do have two GeForce GTX 550Ti in SLI mode, but that for 3D work it's not so great. I'm thinking of selling my gpu and buy one of the below (gpus here in Brazil are expensive as hell). So ... should I do it or should I continue with my gpu and save money to buy a better Quadro next year?

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
Corsair Dominator 1600 16Gigs

AMD ATI Firepro V3900 1GB DDR3 PCI-Express 31004-26-41R
AMD ATI Firepro V4900 1GB DDR5 PCI-Express 31004-24-41R
GeForce GTX660 2048MB (2GB) DDR5 PCI-Express 02G-P4-2660-KR (in this case I would trade 2 gpus for one with more bandwith and cuda cores)

Maybe you guys could share your specs for comparison. This way I can have an idea of where to upgrade next year.

Unless your making use of a program that can make use of more then one gfx card (like octane for example) your pretty much wasting your time with more then one card. rather buy one very good card then two not so good cards.

As for the quadros I have a quadro 4000 and I have been very disappointed by its speed and ability to handle very large scenes.( I suspect its just Autodesks very poor driver integration) Unless your doing big cad / cam stuff rather buy the best non quadro Nvidia Gfx card you can. Also check forums and the like to find out which ones have issues in 3d. Its known that the Nvidia 550 have issues with 3d , where as the 4xx and 6xx perform a lot better.

It also depends on what type of gfx work you are looking at doing.

I bought two cards because when I bought the price was really good and I was using it for gaming. Since I don't game in more than 6 months, there's no reason to continue with 2 cards. I did some research before asking here, but I didn't find the benchmarks results all conclusive. Most of them compare the Quadros 5000 / 6000 that are way of budget.

Primarily, general work in 3D, but I guess some simulation work (I love FX). Not that my card won't handle, but I was thinking of an upgrade nevertheless.

I have been rewarded always with good enough consumer graphic cards. From your list i'll go for the 660. Isn't Nividia already in 7xx series btw?

Yes, but the price tag of these new gpu here is absurd!!

And also sometimes its better to go with what is known to work well then chasing after the new hotness ;)

Based on your budget my choice would be GTX 680, GTX 670, GTX 660Ti or GTX 660 in that order. If you can afford it, GTX680.

Thanks for the input Dan. I'll try to go after the GTX 660Ti. The 680 is 'just' $ 400 more expensive here.

I found out about the GTX760 which is just $ 100 bucks more expensive than the GTX 660Ti. So maybe that can be an option.
