Hi Farhaad. yes, i think this will do what you want... import this material library to your scene and apply the material as an override to your pass.
Play around with the values in the "change_range" node:
-the old range represents the minimum and maximum height in your scene
-the new range represents how that will translate into color.
Right now its using 0 and 10 as min and max heights, translating into a full black to full white gradient. Anything outside those boundaries will be clamped to black or white, accordingly.

i've imported the .xsi into view port but nothing happens and no shader adds into shaders list..

Re: y-depth
but it seems the vector state on intersection points doesn't give the right position of each point in the scene.!! or something i've missed.!?
coz..it's ramp is not world dependence ..ant it moves with object.! thanks again for the effort.!!

Re: y-depth
ooh no you didn't do anything wrong and neither did i!
XSI changed, that's what. i created that material in xsi 6.5 and it worked fine. now i just tried it under softimage 2010 and it didn't behave as expected. the "Vector 2 Scalar" node changed, so now what you need instead is the "vector to scalars" and link the output Y to the change range node.
i attached the Softimage 2010 material, but i don't know what version you're using, so it might not work on your scene...
