Anyone here willing to share any experiences with Marvelous Designer?
Worth the money? Good workflow? Usable with Softimage?
You know the drill... ;)

Re: Marvelous Designer?
Did some tests about a month or so ago. Super great workflow inside Marvelous to design, build, drape, and sim the cloth. However after you export it the topo is not so great. The line flow doesn't align with the arms or body and thus can give some funky results and is not easy to render because of all of the triangles and faceting. If they ever get around to a feature to export quads you may be in business.

RonenBerkerman has a nice explain on how he used it for his Arch viz, on his website/blog
its 3dsmax/Vray but the ideas are cross-platform.
I hope that helps.

Hmm, that would seem to be a serious issue...EricTRocks wrote:The line flow doesn't align with the arms or body and thus can give some funky results and is not easy to render because of all of the triangles and faceting.
Thank you both for your replies so far.

Re: Marvelous Designer?
If you up the resolution in Marvelous it won't be too much of an issue. But there is also the fact you may need to make a version for the animators to have on the character as a reference. If it isn't aligned nicely, weighting is not going to be good and you'll have to retopo.

This was done with it at Passion. Weta use it for their clothing creation, but not the simming, ( but saying that, it's a very competent simulation engine indeed.)
I use it a lot and love it. You can get a triangulation effect if you don't have the res high enough, but you just have to raise it to an acceptable level for the shot.

Re: Marvelous Designer?
It's a nice modern package, the pattern workflow is perfect for cloth, free UVs are great, and the simulation is the best I've seen so far. So that's the good things...
What you get out of it is a bit "raw" though. I did get arond the triangulation thing, but only with some headache causing workflow
Used the ZBrush "morph to UV" function, then ZRemesh to get a flat quad mesh, and then doing the same UV flattening with ICE, then binding the two flat meshes together and finally removing the flattening in ICE and apply the exported MDD animation..
Nice thing about it was that I could also model some additional fine cloth details into the flat quad mesh which will get auto animated by the MDDs.

Re: Marvelous Designer?
Well, an another interesting idea shattered. I seem to recall they sold perpetual licenses once, but now they've switched to "full rental"? And while $359.88 isn't that much, considering (although to "poor" me it still is, sadly), $359.88 per year is a different beast altogether.
Thank you all for your advise, obviously. ;)

Re: Marvelous Designer?
They have perpetual licenses too, for around 550 euros (or 400 for the animation-less version).
You could try entering a gallery competition with the trial version, there's not so many participants, so there's a quite good chance of winning a 30% or 100% coupon.

Re: Marvelous Designer?
That just made my day.
Thanks, I simply didn't scroll down far enough on their pricing page, silly me.

Re: Marvelous Designer?
Perpetual is the best option imho (with the rather slow update history they had so far)
Also because the most important features are in there already. That's why I won't update my old MD version probably.
