Actually Blender gain a lot of exposure due Valve support (two new member added to the original staff, now they are 6 full time developers)

Here a critics to blender from Andy Price:

A couple of weeks ago I was in a conference with the Kiribati crew, they are doing a feature animated film with Blender (and it looks quite nice) :)

We should make sure, that they don't ignore XSI in the UI discussion ;)

I'd believe they will try to make GUI even more customizable. If so, I think it will worth to do some work on something SI like. For now, I think BMAx Tools are nice example of what is possible to do, still without compiling.

IMO this is not a priority for Blender Foundation. Seems PieMenu totally disappears from 2.69 release.

As reported here:
http://code.blender.org/index.php/2013/ ... nd-beyond/
a GUI refresh (radical?) is expected in 2.7x release cycle, so I think this mean one or more year to come. Also they point to move to opengl 2.1 and this is very good.

Unfortunately in blenderartist discussion softimage workflow and GUI is not mentioned at all...
