rotate vector 90 degrees

Post by clankill3r » 25 Aug 2013, 18:57

I have a vector (the green one coming from normalize node).
I rotate that vector 90 degrees in x and 90 degrees in z.
If i try to macth the surfaces of a box to it then you can see that the rotation is not 90 degrees.
How did this happen?

I have a bit of a problem explaining myself since i'm not a native english speaker.
So here i will describe the problem again in a different way.

If you look at the box then the green vector allings with one edge of the box. The purple one alligns with the surface of the box. The blue one not at all.
But i rotated the green vector 2 times 90 degrees as you can see in the ice tree. So why doesn't it match with the box?

Because you didn't mantain orthogonality. You used wrong rotation axis in Rotate Vector node.
Try this:

Hi. I find it difficult to understand so i watch a lot of videos on math now.
What i wondered. You have the vector node on the left of your tree. If i set 2 of the values to zero then it doesn't work anymore. Why is that?
I have the same problem now. I try to understand the dot product and i thought making a small test in ICE can help since i have instant feedback of how a value changes. If i have for example the y and the z of one null at zero and i move the other null around then the dot product doesn't change when i move it in the y or z direction. Why is this?

Doesn't this not make more sense? (result is the same)

Also this is what i meant, if my fist vector is at 1 0 0 the it gets to cross product to 1 0 0 which fails.

I fixed it with this. Don't know if it's a good fix but so far it seems to work.
