Hair solution in Softimage?

Post by j3st3r » 14 Aug 2013, 06:42

Hey guys

I'm just thinking if it is possible to create a hair solution that is like hair farm for Max? Is it possible to fill in polygonal mesh volume with strands? Or just buy Hairfarm and forget hair in SI?

What makes you think that it isn't possible? Actually it should be fairly simple to do that.

Looks like a very interesting plugin. I think its doable also. Problem is, and I know I'll be getting some grief for this, that we've got two very powerful frameworks for ICE Hair (Kristinka & Melena both), but they are both just that: powerful frameworks, not polished end-user products like this Hair Farm appears to be. This isn't a dig at the developers of these frameworks BTW (as that's exactly what a framework is, it provides further opportunities), maybe more of a dig at the rest of the hair-raising community...

But did you try it? It does seem to be standalone using XSI Hair BTW. I seem to recall trying this when it first was published and being "slightly" underwhelmed. Could have been improved upon in the meantime, though, I'm willing to admit...

PS & edit: I can't seem to find a current download link for this, but that could be due to the fact that I am blind...

You could just take two meshes (one is a copy of the first one), deform and offset the "tip" mesh and then use a reinterpret location node to get the end position of the strand on the tip mesh. Curves could be used to interpolate the strands inbetween the base and the tip. Pretty easy stuff.

Should be possible, including all that small but important things when it comes to product for end-user. Like automatic selection of entire segment of extrusion, so on. But yes, commercial hairdressers seem to be very agile when it comes to protection of their work ( it's not only 'our' XSI hair guy), so development will include the verifying of all possible patents.

Exactly Kristinka Hair, it follows a 'feasible' development for free stuff. Occasionally I already have some experience when it comes to volunteer's projects ( totally out of 3d or like) - so I'd believe the most important is to stay into bounds, of what's possible to do constantly, for a long time. That's why there is no exactly anything more than ICE compounds, for download. On the other side, as long as everything is about ICE compounds only, yeah it's more pleasant for people who already are able to build something similar. IMHO it's ICE who likes "developers". Set of compounds alone, really can't change this, significantly.

Back to real world, perhaps it's good idea to ask people of Fabric Engine, or much better, to give them some real offer. At least, (successful) result of some pool.
