A few years old already but an interesting development from the audio synthesizer sector:
Shows that UI innovation didn't stop after sliders and buttons were invented - unlike most (all?) 3d apps on the market suggest.
Range sliders, 2D sliders natively in the UI instead of some unwieldy viewport gizmos... Can't be that hard to make.. Hoping that some day people start asking for this stuff.

The first company I worked for back in 1997 had a software where you could animate facial expression with this kind of control 
Each expression was a circle, you could move the circles so they were intersecting, and the result shape was an interpolation between the mouse position and the differant circles.
So we were runing simulations and moving the mouse to update the faces .Then the animation was sent back to softimage|3D
