How To Achive similar effect in ICE

Post by shadster » 15 Jun 2013, 13:23

Hello everyone,,

I am new to softimage and to this site ,and i'm loving both already :)

i was wondring if anyone can shed some light on how to achive the effect in this video http://vimeo.com/38017188

Using ICE.

From what i know this was done in Houdini and here is a video showing a basic breakdown. http://vimeo.com/38421611

the questions in my minde are: did they emit particles from the video fotage or did they emit from a mesh that has motion capture files or what exactly? any ideas, compounds, tutorials??

Thanx

I think they get initial particles from motion capture, those particles emit other particles and some have instances

Thanx Bullit!

What do you mean by some have instances?

and can someone direct me to how to go about making particles emit other particles?

Thanx again!

Well I believed this is created in Blender, when someone didn't know how to spend free time :).
Don't believe there is anything else than plain 3d here. Motion seems to be to be simple, randomized rotations, moved center of rotation, or like. Exploded meshes, strands or cylinders created from edges of triangles, randomized clones, strand trails...
For start, I think you could take look at factory examples of strand trails. Let's say, to experiment with 'generate strand trails' compound. Create some emission, rotate the emitter.
Or, generate strand trails over flowing emission, around some mesh - using 'flow around surface' compound.
Accompanying story is impressive, but implementation... I don't think so. It's very annoying to see these faceted trails, no motion blur or any other smooth transition. Also, at least some kind of turbulence, 'dart throw', any kind of avoidance, instead of that plain, overlapped random emission.

Thanx a lot Mathaeus!!

you explanation is great! i'll have to get my hands dirty with ICE , as i'm new to this system and still a bit overwhelmed with its power :)

Will post some updates as soon as i have something pretty ;)

about resources, perhaps the polynoid stuff. I think there are few hard-coded nodes for dart throw emission - even one from link, based on factory nodes, could be enough. Imho dart throw thing could be a good example how different emission can improve everything.

One would, however, think, the 3 people credited for "3D Tracking" (which is something different from "motion capture") work, had something to do with the motion of the 3D.

From my own conspiracy theory, art director was fascinated with low level 3d procedural stuff (for whatever reason), then workers were forced to create each effect alone. Finally, workers had to composite the all overlaps. All that directly under the eye of art director. If my theory works, then yes, such process requires enormous time, a lot of workers too. This could explain low level effects, they probably tried to spare some time. However, "low level" is for 3d artist, which probably doesn't worth that much in entire process, but that's another story.

Hi Again,

I have applied the factory Dynamics Strands to an animated mesh that i took from (Syflex_Jiggle) scene. and modified a bit and it seems to be generating trails behind the motion :)

i will probably use the dart Throw Compound and render a separate pass of particles and composite later!

But its interesting what you can do once you have a nice system working.

I come from a 3ds Max background and softimage to me is just amazing and real pleasure to use!

its from another planet!

You could try to use the Neural Net compound that was shared on this forum to, it looks like this:

https://vimeo.com/39223055

or my little (miss spelt...) test:

https://vimeo.com/67387290

you can get the compound from here:
