Ok this a bit of a crazy idea so bear with me.
For automatic/semi-automatic re-topology proposes, what about having an internal 3d scanner in Softimage with ICE, the number of points could be driven by curvature of the object, obviously tweakable. I think this could work with raycast.
Is it too crazy?unworkable? typical re-topology is good enough?

I think its an original and tempting idea. Autopo is IMO something quite different from retopo. Maybe it could also handle KINECT-pointcloud data. Although come to think of it thats something different again.

afaik it's very very hard for computers to recognize these structures, but easy for humans. Let's say, recognizing direction of branches in tree (I mean, real tree), That's about auto re-topology. By drawing some guides, story become different. Still there's question about performance. ICE is general tool, don't know how it competes against tools, created for specific purpose.
