Speedmodeling #1 - Sports

Post by Hirazi Blue » 10 May 2013, 09:12

Let’s start the first Weekend Speedmodeling Channel.
As a slight twist and a concession we’ll run this one
until Monday night (23:59 CET+1) and see where it goes.

The topic of this very first si-community Speedmodeling is SPORTS.
Model something using Softimage (no other software) somehow related to sports in the allotted time of 90 minutes.

Rules:
  • Please be honest. We obviously have no way to check if you made your object in the allotted time or solely using Softimage. We trust that this being a friendly competition doesn’t necessitate cheating anyway.

Post a screenshot of a shaded wireframe in this thread and do mention how long it took you to model it. If you want to render it, feel free to so, this doesn’t have to be done within the 90 minutes. The shaded wireframe, however, is mandatory.

After the contest everybody (even those who didn’t participate) is able to vote for their favorite until Wednesday (23:59 CET+1). Voting criteria would be modeling quality and originality as per the topic at hand. The winner gets to decide the next topic, which he or she announces in a new thread the next Friday (CET+1). If you start such a new thread, copy and adapt this post for clarification.
Please participate and happy modeling... ;)

Thank you all for participating...
And the winner is: anyone who thought this idea not to be worthwhile
as this whole Speedmodeling contest won't be repeated as far as I am concerned...

Wow!.. Can you believe it?.. I didn't see this post before, and actually I check this forum more times everyday.
I think others didn't see it.

Please, don't give up on it.
If I can suggest, maybe a contest could be something more detailed. The same thing for everybody. If the time is short and in the free time, someone would like to think ideas the less possible, I guess.

Yea i would keep going with it. I thought i would make an effort seeing and we had talked about it in another thread. Was going to make some Rugby League goal posts, figured that would be quick and easy. Even found all the dimensions on the net then all hell broke loose. Computer motherboard died, Now stuck on a six year old laptop that has about as much grunt as Max without plugins. Then my daughter got sick and sunday was mothers day here so just didnt have any time.

Didn't notice it either until now, it seems to have been in stealth mode ;)

In case you change your mind, let me know if you need banner, top row graphics etc!

Late realization: I think one problem might have been that most users I believe check the "View active topics" and this thread was never bumped to the top there because it's been renamed from the other speedmodeling thread.

"big things have small begginings"

now seriously, dont give up just yet, a bit more communication (top row image + maybe some tweets and such) might help.

[OT] going into the future I would not constraint this to modelling only challenges... as this forum does not have massive amounts of modeling wip threads, but that is just me...

Sorry, I am sort of having a hard time believing nobody noticed this thread.
We discussed the possibility of such a contest in this thread, so people were forewarned as far as I am concerned.
I even promoted this thread to sticky status.

If someone wants to pick up the pieces and start a second attempt at this, feel free to open a thread with a new topic next Friday (you can easily copy the rules from the OP here). Just state your intention in this thread, so we won’t have numerous parallel contest threads going on (as if).

Personally I think something must earn its place in the gallery and besides that, the gallery is Oweis responsibility and concern and I don’t want to intervene there. So highlighting any kind of contest in the gallery would have to be decided by “upper management”, not just by poor little “middle management” me.
:p

Interesting how nobody took up the gauntlet to open the second installment of this challenge. Sort of proves my point, I'm afraid...

I dont think you're correct here. Not many people at all (IMHO) model in softimage - period. Why start now, even for a 90 minute challenge when you can work so much faster in another dedicated modeller that you already use all the time

or in a workflow that you already use all the time

such as modo > zbrush > goz > modo. Thus, I dont see the appeal to having a softimage modelling challenge. Just makes no sense. We (the community, if I may speak for them) are busy people who like our established workflows and are interested in ICE, however, not any ICE time based challenges because it takes time to make anything thats worth showing unless you have uber experience. Hope that helps. :o3

I'd love to enter. Unfortunately my plate is full for a long time to come with things to complete.

As you said, in your humble opinion. Very personally, unfortunately, speed.. anything... is something I doing at least eight hours everyday, so... hour and half, more at evening, honestly this sounds like a bad joke. That's just me, of course.

Anyway all the best for challenge.

Softimage is a powerful program to model in, I was told a long time ago I needed to learn a 3D app with more power, why I left Lightwave for Softimage, and at the time someone put my name in and I was getting calls from Avid to buy Softimage, until I did :)
