Creating contour rings

Post by maxcrow » 03 May 2013, 12:21

Back story.
I'm using turbulize mesh to create a displacement. The value of the displacement drives a position on a gradient in the object's render tree creating interesting rings or contours. However there I would like to use an image about 1K wide for greater control and to create fine contour lines.

Problem.
Can you get the scalar value to pick from the image, like a UV value where it only needs for example to pick the U position of 0.4 rather than the gradient?

I would ideally like to create strand rings but that's way beyond my skill level.
Thanks.

Image_lookup node should be able to do that (uses the X and Y coords of the 3D input vector for sampling the image)

Brilliant! Thanks for that. Here is the result with the render tree working.

Fulldome trippy effects on tap!
