global transforms (symmetry)

Post by nautilus » 10 Apr 2013, 15:51

hello forum,
i tumbled over this problem and can´t find a solution.
i have:
-parentgeo (untransformed)
--childgeo (locally rotated)
now when i SCALE the X-axis of the parentgeo globally (like a symmetrical mirroring), the local rotation of the childgeo isnt "mirrored".
but when i do the same transformation in ICE (or in Maya or in Cinema 4D), the childgeo´s local rotation is also mirrored, which i would intuitively expect as being correct or normal.

ps: i thought i have understood the global/local/transforms/matrix mathematics, i watched tons of videos and read tons of books regarding this, but every now and then i run into the same old/new problems again and again.

i´ve attached a screenshot (on the left side you can see the untransformed original set, on the right in red the scaled (aka "mirrored" one), and also on the right in green the "correct" ICE-transformed set)
thank you very much.

Softimage has a special method of scaling called "hierarchical". You can see the math behind here if you scroll to the bottom:

The idea behind hierarchical scaling is to prevent children being sheared if they are rotated and the parent is scaled non-uniformly.

If you want classic scaling, you can turn Softimage scaling off individually per object on the Scaling tab of its Local Transform property. You can also make classic scaling the default for new objects in your General preferences.

hello grahamef,
this makes things clear now, didnt know there´s such a functionality.
learned something new. very good.

thank you for your answer.
