Well theres the new Houdini, Modo 7 is looking really good, for those who can get past the modeler in LW 11.5 the rest looks really impressive. I suspect a lot of folks are go to be doing some serious investigating after the unfold event.

Well, once you factor in the unlimited matra render tokens it doesn't look so bad? Though the annual upgrade prices are a little eye-watering ;)

It's definitely not for the small guy, however for the middle and up studio it's a no brainer.
Houdini already started to slowly invade the other film industry fields such as animation and rendering, where once it was used only for simulations.

Definitely not my cup of tea.
My experience in release 9 was bad, slow modelling and lack of any nice tools (move component tool, how wonderful are you?), rigging was slow and not so effective like is softimage (paint weight, very slow), the history stack is a nodes scheme (don't remember the name), very sophisticated but I think nodes are not the best solution for all and I prefer the linearity of the history stack (in any case I rarely use it). But seems they have done many improvement, but not in modelling side (I doing characters primarily, for video game and rapid prototyping, so I'm tempted more by modo 7 and his new heavy viewport)

I don't see how either small business or big business is suppossed to deal with all these annual costs. There are several packages you need to own in order to stay competitive. Software updates per person can easily reach 10.000€ per year. In these times not really appropriate.

In both case you would build it into your costs. However you need to balance that against whether it keeps you competitive or not. If it causes you to loose clients you need to loo for something cheaper. I know folks that have started out on Blender because it was free with the intention of moving back to Maya (which was what we were teaching them at the time) However when the time came they remained with blender because it gave them a big cost edge over their competitors. They are only a 4 man show now but they are doing excellent work and are able to feed their families which at the end of the day is the most important to them.

It depends how you make your money I guess - if you do a couple of medium sized simulation jobs with fluids or clouds this looks like it would pay for itself very quickly. I'm looking at the cloth solver with envy as well, per point attributes and not through some very limited weightmap access.

Even if 3.000$ are offensive, it not this amount on its own. It's the sum of all fees you need to pay. And companies nowadays are forcing you to pay for it annually. Otherwise you have to pay even more. It this greedy business scheme which makes it so disgusting.
