This (via xsisupport) might still concern some:

It's a Scandinavian reseller, but I doubt this to be a regional thing.
Always nice that such info comes from resellers (first), not from Autodesk itself...

Vista is not officially supported, but that doesn't mean that Softimage won't run on Vista.
It's not like we had to do a separate build just for Vista; but we didn't test on Vista, so if you hit a Vista-specific issue...

yes, I can't imagen doing HDRI photography editing for instance on a 32bit pc now.....
Even my 32 gigs of RAM are hardly enough sometimes ;-)

Not to speak about rendering, comping etc. etc.
Despite the odd memory management in Windows sometimes, 64bit is the way to go and 32bit apps are disappearing fast.

@Rork - Okay, I'll bite ;)
Once I tamed it a little, at the time it was a perfectly decent OS for my needs. Like xsisupport already mentioned, that ship has sailed for Softimage already. But as an OS is as good as the tasks you have to set it, I was never on the "I hate Vista" bandwagon.

@ace63 - It's true, 32 bit is a bit (pun intended) outdated, but the way this information gets to us and the timing is quite typical IMHO. If I were using a 32 bit OS still, I really would have wanted a little more time to adapt to this news (i.e. upgrade to a 64 bit OS). This isn't a decision that was made yesterday. They should have mentioned this months in advance IMHO.

A lot of us already jumped on the 64bit bandwagon when XP Professional 64 came out, as bad as it was sometimes with drivers and such.
It advantages were more than the disadvantages, with much more RAM to play with.

Doing any 3D, compositing or VFX work on a 32bit pc these days is... well.... silly imho. ;)
Not because RAM is dead cheap, but there's no new CPU sold that doesn't support 64bit anyway. Atom excluded.....

As for the timing.. the resellers were just briefed about the new release. I think it is meant to be their responsibility to relay this information, and any general upgrade issue, to their clients.

No, it is not. Resellers are more of a burden than a help these days. Especially with the internet available to everybody.

Why would I contact my reseller for an update, if I can download it directly?
Why would I need a reseller if I can buy software directly?

This information has to be addressed by the manufacturer of the software, and stated on their website next to the global software information.
Now forcing it onto resellers to do their jobs, god knows most of them are just horrific.......
