Hey guys, I always wondered how to create some custom Shader PPG.
Is there some detailed info on how to achieve this? Lets say i want to compile my own Architectural Material with my own settings, PPg names and custom things.
How would i do it? Is somewhat simple or it requires pain and suffering?
Thanks
Max

Re: Creating custom shader PPG
if its just to make your own default setting it isn't too hard. i never really built my owe shader but for example I didn't want to not have alpha on with my AO shader as defalut. so i just set that value to 1 saved it and Boom, I don't need to always worry about forgetting to turn it off.
first duplicate the shader as a back up just in case. ;)
and just in the shaders PPG, you could right click on the shader name and a scripted editor and you could change the settings to any one you like. then save it, you can make your own presets.
hope this helps.

Re: Creating custom shader PPG
Yeah, sorry if I wasnt that clear, changing values on actual shaders is quite simple with editing the original file, I wanted to make PPGs and organize the actual set of parameters as i Like, maybe add or remove tabs, custom PPG.

Re: Creating custom shader PPG
do you to do it the new way via shaderdef or the old way vie ppg?
The new way is now recommended by Softimage.
http://download.autodesk.com/global/doc ... =d30e21361
Myself I did found that a bit confusing until i dug deeper into shader writing with Mental ray. Then it's started to make sense.
Good information on shader writing (oldy but goody):
http://www.nanomation.co.uk/Programming-101.html
http://www.nanomation.co.uk/Programming-102.html
http://accad.osu.edu/~smay/RManNotes/ this is a must read, you will find an explanation of the layering system .... ring a bell ..."mila layering system"
Brad Christensen did a translate of the RenderMan notes to mental ray available at
http://www.mymentalray.com/component/co ... ?itemid=55
Hope that help!

There's a good sample for the new shader registering method in the sdk folder iirc

Re: Creating custom shader PPG
Give the shader wizard a spin. Start with a simple shader that returns red for everything, or something stupid like that.
