What would be the main reasons for this decision?

Probably because of relighting and post, in some frames you can see some backlighting going on on its ears to enhance the look of the animal, it would be annoying to keylight the greenscreen but then they have total control on the look of the animal, since the animal here plays the most important role i think they did lots of lighting/shading tests, that explain having it on separate greenscreen/pass alone.
